Kangaroo Valley Pioneer Museum Park

Refresh … explore … indulge

Take a break and enjoy a picnic or a bushwalk perched on the banks of the lovely Kangaroo River. Explore the past – see the way our pioneering families lived and worked their farms in bygone days. A great way to indulge both body and mind – for all the family.

The Pioneer Museum Park is one of the major tourist attractions in Kangaroo Valley. The Museum Park, a self-funded, voluntary organisation, was established to give a snapshot of life in the 1800s when Kangaroo Valley was settled first by cedar timber cutters and later by farmers. The Park also manages and displays a collection of artefacts of the original Indigenous inhabitants of the area, the Wodi Wodi tribe.

There is a variety of activities for visitors to engage in within the Museum complex which covers an area of 2.5 hectares, some being a relocated family homestead over 100 years old along with farm buildings and equipment used during the early pioneering days of Kangaroo Valley. These buildings were previously located at Bendeela and with the completion of the Tallowa Dam, this area was flooded to form Lake Yarunga. After your picnic lunch you can walk off your meal by taking the bushwalking paths that cover a further 4.5 hectares adjoining the Museum proper. Being situated close to the historic Hampden Bridge, the site is also a popular place to have your wedding photos taken.

The Park is of particular interest to primary and secondary school teachers as they can organise an inquiry process that enables students to:

Initiate investigations by posing questions

Identify and gather information from relevant sites, museums, artefacts, maps and oral histories.

Collect and use primary and secondary sources to investigate the history of the community.

Picnic facilities, bush walks, souvenirs.
